South Korea’s economic growth outlook for this year has been significantly upgraded.
The Korea Development Institute, or KDI, a state-run economic research institute, has raised its 2026 economic growth forecast for South Korea to 3.2%.
That is a significant increase of 0.7 percentage points from its previous forecast of 2.5% in May.
The key driver behind the stronger growth outlook is the semiconductor industry.
As global investment in AI continues to expand, semiconductor demand has grown more strongly than expected, leading to rapid increases in exports and facility investment.
KDI forecasts that facility investment will increase by 7.9% this year.
In particular, of the 0.7-percentage-point upward revision to the growth forecast, approximately 0.6 percentage points are attributed to improving conditions in the semiconductor industry.
In other words, semiconductors are driving much of South Korea’s economic growth.
However, employment remains a concern.
While the economic growth forecast has risen sharply, KDI lowered its forecast for the increase in the number of employed people from 170,000 to 110,000, a reduction of 60,000.
This is partly because the semiconductor industry generates enormous exports and investment but has a relatively limited impact on overall employment.
KDI also forecasts that private consumption will grow by just 2.3%.
This means that although headline economic growth is expected to strengthen considerably, ordinary people may not feel the same degree of improvement in the job market or in their everyday economic conditions.
Another concern is that the current growth momentum is heavily concentrated in one particular industry — semiconductors.
If the semiconductor industry weakens, South Korea’s overall economic growth could also be affected.
Economic growth of 3.2%, but employment increasing by only 110,000.
This is why concerns are growing over what some describe as a “semiconductor illusion” — a situation in which South Korea posts strong headline economic growth while many people struggle to feel the benefits of the recovery.
